Man sentenced over choking his ex

- VICTORIA NUGENT

A MAN who hit, kicked and choked his partner in front of her children has faced justice.

The 32- year- old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced Townsville District Court yesterday to be sentenced for domestic violence and a range of other offences, including drug and driving related matters and a bail breach.

Crown prosecutor Shannon Sutherland said on August 26, 2017, the man and his thenpartner had an argument about her playing on poker machines the night before.

“He said it was her fault he was assaulting her,” she said.

“He told the children that ‘ your mother has double stan- dards’ and it was forcing him to be crazy.”

Ms Sutherland said the couple’s three- year- old son intervened to stop the assault.

Defence barrister Michael Hibble said the man lost his job in 2016 and began using the drug ice.

The court heard the man had 222 days of pre- sentence custody to declare.

Judge Gregory Lynham said there was no reason for a man to ever hit a woman.

“Whether you’re drug affected or not, you don’t go around hitting women,” he said.

The man was sentenced to two years for choking and two years for assault occasioning bodily harm.

He received one month im- prisonment each for two counts of possessing a dangerous drug, possessing anything used in the commission of a crime, three counts of possession of utensils, contravention of a domestic violence order, unlawful possession of a weapon, and three months each for attempted fraud and receiving tainted property.

He was convicted and not further punished for contravening a domestic violence order, possessing dangerous drug, breach of bail, offences relating to registration certificates, two counts of using an unregistered vehicle and using an uninsured vehicle.

He was released from custody yesterday due to time already served..
