Fatality amid LA hostage drama

-

WIMBLEDON chiefs are considering a controversial move to install an artificial playing surface on Centre Court to allow for more matches.

Plans are advanced for a hybrid practice court and committee members have been briefed about such surfaces.

There is growing demand for more women’s games on Centre Court.

The rye- grass surface often wears out under the demands of a two- week event, so research is being funded into an artificial weave.

The plan would be to introduce it at club level first. A PRIVATE inspector says he warned the company operating duck boats on a Missouri lake about design flaws putting the watercraft at greater risk of sinking less than a year before the accident that killed 17 people during a sudden storm.

Steve Paul, owner of the Test Drive Technologies inspection service, said on the weekend he had issued a written report for the company in August 2017.

It explained why the boats’ engines – and the pumps that removed water from their hulls – might fail in inclement weather. NIGER’S army said on Saturday it had killed “10 terrorists” after one of its military positions in the southwest of the country was attacked by fighters from the Boko Haram jihadist group.

“In the night from Thursday to Friday, the military station of Baroua was attacked by the terrorist group Boko Haram,” Niger’s defence ministry said in a statement.

A preliminary report said one army soldier was killed and two were injured.

“On the enemy’s side, 10 terrorists were killed,” the statement added. A WOMAN has been killed after a gunman accused of shooting his grandmother and girlfriend was holed up inside a Los Angeles supermarket, sparking a three- hour standoff that ended with his surrender.

Between 40 and 50 people were in the Silver Lake Trader Joe’s store when the gunman burst in after crashing his car about 1.30pm LA time on Saturday following a police pursuit.

He fired shots at police during the chase from the LA suburb of Newton to Silver Lake.

An officer returned fire, hitting him in the left arm.

Throughout the three- hour dr drama, police spoke on the ph phone with the man, who was wa wanted for shooting his grandm mother seven times. Her conditio tion was unknown late ye yesterday.

A 20- year- old woman in his ca car was rescued by police and ta taken to hospital for treatment.

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti p praised police and firefighters w who swarmed the site for savin ing many lives and entering n negotiations with the man.

The suspect walked out of th the store with a cluster of four hostages and appeared to be already handcuffed as the g group emerged. Police imm mediately surrounded him, searched him and took him to a waiting ambulance.

Investigators believe the suspect, whose name hadn’t been released last night, had shot his grandmother and girlfriend and then fled in a 2015 Toyota Camry after dragging the young woman into the car.

Police used LoJack technology to locate the car and tried to stop it before pursuing it, Mr Garcetti said, adding that the suspect shot at police through the back window of his car.

Don Kohles, 91, was walking into the supermarket when he saw a car chased by police crash into a pole just outside.

“Then this guy comes out of the car and starts running toward TJ’s,” Mr Kohles said.

“I look behind me and there were two police guys coming with heavy guns, then boom, boom, boom, boom, so I go into TJ’s and I see this guy and he comes in.”

Officers in riot gear and armed with rifles stood along the side of the shop and used mirrors to try to look inside as hostages periodically came out with their hands raised.

President Donald Trump tweeted he was “watching Los Angeles possible hostage situation very closely”.
