Proving ground for students’ skills
THE North Queensland Stadium is providing a unique focus to help university students learn skills for jobs of the future.
This semester, James Cook University students at the College of Business, Law and Governance are studying a multidisciplinary project subject that is providing work- integrated learning opportunities in conjunction with the North Queensland Stadium project.
JCU Associate Professor Laurie Murphy said the university was pleased to be working with the North Queensland Stadium project for the first time in this important capstone subject.
“The multidisciplinary project subject requires students from different majors in the Bachelor of Business, as well as Bachelor of IT students, to work together and apply what they have learned in the classroom in a real industry context,” Associate Professor Murphy said.
“The opportunity to engage with such a high profile, iconic project in their own city is an exciting opportunity that enhances student engagement in learning, as well as preparing them with the skills and experience to better meet industry needs now and into the future.”
The North Queensland Stadium project’s links to JCU go beyond the “multidisciplinary project” subject.
Townsville MP Scott Stewart said a key objective of the North Queensland Stadium project was to support local jobs, now and in the future.
“We expect high levels of local industry participation to continue as construction of the stadium progresses, while at the same time JCU students will now be getting valuable hands- on experience to help prepare them for knowledgebased jobs of the future,” he said. “This collaborative student project is an extra benefit from the construction of the stadium.”
