Glassy weekend to greet anglers

- SCOTT SAWYER

HE MIGHT have come up empty on his birthday but Gavin Miles is preparing for a barramundi raid with a glassy weekend to greet anglers.

Mr Miles had his boat out in Ross River yesterday to mark his 53rd birthday.

He took his dad, Kelvin Miles, visiting from Hervey Bay, out to Cleveland Bay and then down to Crocodile Creek but the tides were working against them.

They jagged a couple of small trevally and a “giant catfish” but nothing much else of note.

But the pair were gearing up for what looks like a great weekend in offshore waters with winds tipped to drop to between five and 10 knots.

The Bushland Beach resident said the cool afternoon breeze had lowered water temperatures.

Mr Miles, who has lived in the region for 26 years, said they were planning to head up to Hinchinbrook Channel on Sunday and chase barramundi, mangrove jack and fingermark.

“Hinchy fished good last week,” he said.

Ross River resident Steve Tupper has lived on a boat in the river for three years.

He said the tides may make it tough for those looking to fish the estuaries this weekend, but he tipped a bumper weekend on the water.

“The reef will be the pick of them, without the run ( of the tide) there’s more chance of getting to the bottom,” he said.

“It’ll be pretty packed here.”
