Standing up for White Ribbon Day

- KELSIE IORIO

A TOWNSVILLE boys’ school is encouraging its students to take a stand against domestic violence.

Ignatius Park College students held a whole- school White Ribbon Day on Tuesday, learning about the severity of violence against women and how to break the cycle by opening up dialogue about respectful relationships with women and gender equality.

Seniors donned black “Stand Up, Speak Out” shirts with white ribbons, while juniors wore write T- shirts to fundraise for the cause.

School captain Julian Rasmussen, 17, said delivering the message at an all- boys school and setting a strong example particularly to junior and middle school students was important.

“It’s definitely a serious issue, and definitely as leaders coming into the new generation of gentlemen, it’s good to teach ( younger students) morals and values when they’re young so they can follow through with it in their lifetime,” he said.

“We were given some facts and statistics regarding domestic violence against females, and how as a college we can all collectively stop the issue.

“Eighty- five per cent of all domestic violence victims are female, so it’s something we need to start at the origin.”

White Ribbon Day is officially held on November 25 each year.
