Renewed push for JT statue

- CLARE ARMSTRONG

PRAISE for NRL legend Johnathan Thurston following his appointment to the state’s top tourism board has led to renewed calls for the sportsman to be immortalised in bronze.

Thurston was appointed to the board of Tourism and Events Queensland under a range of changes announced by the State Government yesterday.

Tourism Minister Kate Jones said JT was a “quintessential Queenslander” who was passionate about the state and would fight for tourism opportunities in the regions.

When asked if the Government was in discussions to have Thurston honoured with a bronze statue outside the new North Queensland Stadium in Townsville Ms Jones said she supported the move.

“I’m not aware of the latest discussions in regards to that but I’m sure that there are many people out there who would love to see a statue of JT,” she said.

“It would seem appropriate to do that in Townsville given everything he has done for the Cowboys.”

Ms Jones’ comments have come after the Bulletin revealed earlier this year Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk was supportive of Thurston getting a statue outside both the North Queensland and Suncorp stadiums.

“Do I support a statue of JT at Townsville stadium? Absolutely,” she said.

“He is such a champion and great role model for Queenslanders everywhere. He could have one at Suncorp, too.”

Thurston’s appointment to the tourism board prompted speculation he may one day make a bid for political office.

But Ms Jones said she believed he was “too smart” for that.

“I think everyone knows that JT is a true leader whether it’s on the field or off the field,” she said.

Thurston said he was “looking forward” to commencing the new role after his career on the field ends.
