Brothers finish top in style

- TRENT SLATTER

BROTHERS have wrapped up the TDRL minor premiership in spectacular fashion with a 70- 2 victory over Charters Towers yesterday afternoon.

Winger Frederick Haines claimed a hat- trick while centres Gordon Daisy and John Cullen both scored doubles in the last round of the regular season.

It was a strong response from the defending premiers following last weekend’s hardfought loss to Centrals.

Brothers captain Jack Kelleher feels they are hitting form at the right time.

“We were pretty disappointed in ourselves last week against Centrals so it’s always good to get a big win,” he said.

“The score blew out, but it was a good chance for us to polish up a few things come semi- finals next week.”

Brothers will take on Herbert River in this weekend’s major semi- final after the Crushers rounded out their regular season with a 38- 16 win over Norths.

The winner will go straight through to the grand final and Kelleher expects another physical clash between the traditional foes.

“The rivalry between Brothers and Ingham has been there for years and it won’t be any different this week,” he said.

“I think the main thing is we’ve just got to hold the footy and be disciplined.”

Meanwhile, Western Lions warmed up for their elimination final against Centrals with a 74- 4 victory over Burdekin.
