Record breakers

Fans show they’ll go, no matter how the Cowboys play

- CHRIS LEES

DESPITE a poor season on field, the North Queensland Cowboys have broken their membership record.

There are 22,876 members at the club and that’s still expected to rise, but these are not all game- day members.

There are 8232 full season members who have tickets to 12 home games, with all other members choosing from the single game, multi game and supporter membership options available with the club.

The highest crowd for Cowboys games in Towns- ville this year was 19,663 in the last game against the Brisbane Broncos.

The lowest was 10,289 against the Penrith Panthers in round nine.

The membership record was broken after last week’s game against the Broncos, where there was a 5.8 per cent rise in memberships.

Compared to the rest of the National Rugby League, the Cowboys membership is higher than most.

The Brisbane Broncos top the list with other powerhouse clubs, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Parramatta Eels and Melbourne Storm ahead of the NQ Cowboys.

Co- captain and membership ambassador Matt Scott said the figure was a “fantastic sign”.

“To hit a membership record after the year we’ve had is testament to what we’ve done as an organisation over the last few years in particular,” he said.

“Not only what the guys on the field have done but the staff off the field, to drive that culture and people want to be a part of this club moving forward.

“On behalf of myself and the staff and the players we want to thank everyone for signing up, it means a lot to us.

“We heard the news as a team and everyone got a buzz out of it.”

Like Scott, Cowboys chief executive officer Greg Tonner said the membership record was a great statement as a community and a club.

“We’re a club that represents our region with our presence on and off the field, and I think our membership figures validate what we’re about and make us feel like we have a strong future,” he said.

Next Friday’s match against the Parramatta Eels is expected to be one of the biggest of the season as it is Johnathan Thurston’s last home game.

“We’re looking forward to the rest of this season, and then going on to make next season a bigger and better one,” Mr Tonner said.
