Major parties failing us

- DEBRA GIBSON, Pinnacles.

THE perfect storm is just starting to make the sky cloudy over Townsville.

Firstly, reports we have a decline in home loan approvals, we have record personal bankruptcy and the highest youth unemployment in the country.

What has caused this massive shutdown in our prosperity?

What has dealt our city and the North the incredible gift of slipping down the ladder of living standards?

Well, the last three decades of voting for the major parties, who, little by little, have concentrated power, wealth and prosperity in the south, has made us all complacent.

We have grown comfortable with our crime rate, we have accepted the loss of jobs, and we have accepted that we will run out of water, again, in the next few years when the rains fail.

We have accepted our massive power costs, we have accepted our loss of value to our homes, but worst of all, we will vote for the same parties that have given us this perfect storm – again.

Little by little the congestion of electorates in the Great South will ensure that all of the prosperity will go to the south.

Votes are in the south, yet we know here in the North that if we decide to stomp our foot, exert our influence and shout from Castle Hill that we want more and not less we can have a balance of power.

We want the flow of jobs, money and prosperity to be stopped from gravity feeding to the south and climb back to us.

If we have grown miserable in some sort of comfort zone, where it all seems too hard and all politicians are out for themselves, then “Houston, we have a problem”.

The perfect storm and loss of voting power have resulted in our declining living standards, the casualisation of our jobs and the loss of this generation being able to afford a home. It has hit our shores. It was not a category 5 cyclone, it was more like a slow category 1 that crept up on us, but the bite is starting to hurt.

We need jobs, we need enterprise and we need commitment from our politicians that emotion and politics are taken out of the game and the families and future of this state are above the major parties fighting for their jobs.

To survive a perfect storm, you have to have the life jackets working and the oars all rowing in the one direction and a boat that does not leak.

The flow must come back to our North. Otherwise, get used to no jobs, no future and no relief from the cost of living.

When you are asked by these same major parties to vote for them, you might need to start to ask why.

There is a minor party out there which, when given the balance of power, can and will show you how to reverse the flow.
