SCHOOL OF ROCK’S BACK, FOLK

- KEAGAN ELDER

A FORMER teacher is bringing her band back to Townsville to play a string of gigs this week.

Kimberly Lysons is the lead singer in folk rock group Band of Dawn, which she formed in 2012.

The band has a fluid membership that sometimes balloons to 12 people.

Lysons put the band on hold in 2013 to focus on her teaching career in Townsville.

She was a primary school teacher at Townsville Grammar and Hermit Park State School. But at the end of last year, she decided to leave the classroom and move to Brisbane to focus on music.

“All of a sudden it came back to me, I need to be an artist,” Lysons said. “That’s my authentic self, music.” But Lysons said her time teaching in the North had inspired her.

She will return to her “home in the North” with Band of Dawn to perform at the Townsville Cultural Festival as well as in the city and on Magnetic Island.

They will be joined by world roots vintage rock outfit Gentle Persons Club, led by Brad Garnett. Gentle Persons Club recently released an EP, All We Need, and Garnett has plans of recording more.

“We’re looking at freshening up the set list with some new material,” he said.

Both Band of Dawn and Gentle Persons Club will play at the Bellevue Hotel tonight and at Base Backpackers on Magnetic Island on Sunday, August 19.

Band of Dawn will also play two shows at the Townsville Cultural Festival tomorrow and on Saturday, joining the likes of Baker Boy, Sunny Ray and the 1RAR Band.
