Weather sparks fire alert

- KELSIE IORIO

FIREFIGHTERS have urged the community to remain alert as bushfire season heats up.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Northern Region acting assistant commissioner Michael O’Neil said local crews were closely monitoring weather conditions as the threat of fires loomed.

“We are in a heightened time of fire danger so we need to make sure people stay vigilant,” he said. “( Conditions are) looking to improve towards the back end of this week, but for the next three days we need to make sure people stay vigilant through the community.”

Eight fire crews battled a grass fire on Monday morning near Mutarnee and Crystal Creek, which sparked a “watch and act” warning from QFES and closed the Bruce Highway because of excessive smoke.

“It’s an opportune time for us to remind all residents and travellers that if there is fire or smoke in the area to make sure they stay on top of the situation,” Mr O'Neil said.

“Take due caution when they’re driving through smoke, slow down and drive to the road conditions.”

Mr O’Neil said despite the heavy workload, with serious bushfires threatening areas around the state, the Townsville region had enough appliances to cover the fire risk.

“We’ve got crews on standby right across the region, from Ingham down to Bowen, we’ve also got the Rural Fire Service volunteers able to respond and assist as required,” he said.
