Christensen vows to push onwards to split state

- TESS IKONOMOU

SUPPORTERS of a separate North Queensland state have outlined the road to referendum in their “Boot Brisbane” campaign forum.

Nationals MP George Christensen said the driving force behind the movement was the region not getting “its fair share” of funding.

“I think we get ripped off in the North … the only way I can see we can change that is to split the state in Christensen said.

“There are those who think it can’t be done, but where there’s a will there’s a way.

“If people feel they are being ripped off then they need to support this campaign.”

He said he would continue to advocate for a break away from Queensland.

“I know there is widespread support for it, there’s been polling that’s been done, I’ve even polled my electorate,” he said. half,” Mr

“Within the LNP I will be pushing for this.

“It is primarily a state issue I notice, but through our forums whether it is a state convention or local branch, I will continue to support it.”

Barrister Peter Raffles has been heavily involved with the campaign, and presented the constitutional provisions for separation last night at the forum. Mr Raffles addressed questions such as who would vote in a referendum, and where a border would be drawn for the proposed state.

Mr Raffles said this wasn’t a matter of asking Brisbane for permission to split the state in half, but giving the people of the region a chance to vote.

“There are two drivers for this, one is our fair share, and second it’s the visionaries of the late 1800s and 1900s in North Queensland who saw that if we made our own decisions here, our economies and communities would grow.”
