BULLETIN SHINES AT CLARIONS
THE Townsville Bulletin has won two prestigious Queensland Clarion Awards.
The annual awards celebrate the state’s quality journalism and the winners were revealed at a gala dinner on Saturday night at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre.
Townsville Bulletin photographer Zak Simmonds won the Regional & Community – News Photograph award for his entry, “Coal lot of trouble”.
The photo ( right) was taken outside a town hall meeting hosted by Labor leader Bill Shorten in February this year.
It captured the moment a Townsville man clashed with anti- Adani protesters.
Clare Armstrong took out the Indigenous Issues Reporting award for her series “Kyburra’s Missing Millions”.
The articles looked into the alleged improper use of funds by the executive of an indigenous corporation based in Townsville.
Journalist Rachel Riley was a finalist in the Regional & Community – Print / Text: Feature Article or Opinion section for her piece “Iraq: A New Hope”.
And photographer Evan Morgan was a finalist for best News Photograph for his photo of rodeo action at Quamby.
Editor Jenna Cairney said there was a talented team at the Townsville Bulletin who were passionate about sharing the stories that mattered, as well as trying to make a difference in the community.
“Zak’s work she said.
“He doesn’t shy away from getting in the thick of it to get that perfect shot.
“Clare’s tenacity was insatiable in covering the story of Kyburra.
“As well as building contacts and trust in the indigenous community she also had to rattle a few cages to tell the story.”
Ms Cairney said the paper was also proud of both finalists.
