Olympic out to do damage

- JON TUXWORTH

MA Olympic coach James Felix is adamant his team can do some damage in the North Queensland Premier League finals after squeezing into the top four with a scoreless draw against Warriors at Melrose Park on Saturday.

Needing at least a draw against the minor premiers to leap- frog Saints into the semis, MA Olympic had the better of the chances but were content with a precious point.

MA Olympic had only racked up one point from their previous three matches, but lifted to give themselves another shot at a title after going down in the last three grand finals.

“It’s our first clean sheet of the year as well,” Felix said.

“They had a couple of chances, but we probably had the better of the chances.

“We defended really well. There was plenty of effort out there, which was lacking in games the last couple of weeks.

“The boys firmly believe we can do it. We’re respectful of the teams in the finals, but we’re not afraid of them.”

Olympic will now prepare for Saturday’s elimination final against Wulguru, who will play in their first Premier League finals campaign in 10 years.

Third- placed Wulguru went down 5- 3 to secondplaced Rebels in a seesawing affair on Saturday night.

After Rebels led 2- 0, Wulguru rallied with the next three goals to hit the front 3- 2, but Rebels dominated the rest of the match.

Making the finals four is a huge achievement for Wulguru after they were relegated to second division last year.

“To finish third after we were relegated is a pretty good effort – everyone’s really happy with it,” coach Gary Robinson said.

“Now we’re in the finals there’s a chance to win it. Once you’re in there, you just have to turn up on the day.”

Warriors will take on Rebels in the major semi, with the winner to progress straight to the grand final.
