MPs fail us on super

-

ONCE again Labor is using veterans for political leverage.

As the LNP candidate, a veteran, I took our superannuation concerns to Canberra just a few weeks ago.

I spoke with the Minister in charge of the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry and expressed my concern that the Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation was being left out of the royal commission.

I was told some interesting facts:

• No member from the House of Representatives in North Queensland has written to this Minister asking for the CSC to be included in the royal commission;

• No member from the House of Representatives in North Queensland wrote to the Minister in charge of the royal commission asking for the CSC to be included in the royal commission as the terms of reference were being drafted.

The key words here are House of Representatives; the elected members have failed to represent their community.

As they have not done their job they create the illusion of now fighting for what we, the community, want.

The simple fact is not one of these members tried to get the CSC added and now instead of owning their mistake they’re using veterans and some who are quite unwell as political pawns.

When the terms of reference were being drafted for the royal commission I was not the LNP candidate.

But, I have had buy- in from the start. I am a director of the Royal Australian Regiment, we wrote to the Minister in charge of the royal commission as the terms of reference were being drafted expressing our concerns that the CSC was not included.

We then encouraged veterans from around Australia including Townsville to write to their federal member so they can write and meet with the Minister in charge.

The Member for Herbert was aware and did nothing.

If you’re not going to represent your constituents in Canberra, then you’re in the wrong job. This is all smoke and mirrors. PHILIP THOMPSON, LNP candidate for Herbert.
