Shoppers packing in to bag bargains

- CHRIS LEES

MYCKALA Penney says she has never seen as many people line up to go shopping as she did at the opening of discount chain Silly Solly’s.

Hundreds of people filed through the store’s doors at its Domain Central home yesterday.

There was a line out the door, with about 500 people either in store or waiting to get in.

Ms Penney, 21, said she got there about 9.30am and there was a giant line.

“I personally have never seen so many people at a shopping centre, it was packed,” she said.

The chain has been greeted with fanfare as it opened stores throughout regional Queensland in the past year.

With nothing more than $ 5 at the store, plenty of people were shopping for a bargain.

Ms Penney said she and her mum were just browsing and not shopping for anything specific but ended up coming out with lots of items.

She said most of what she bought was perfect for Christmas stockings for the kids. One person said he had never seen as many people at one shop and said it was bigger than the Boxing Day sales.

Silly Solly’s director Steve Watchman said the response had been “overwhelming”.

“It just proves that customers are doing it tough and they want to save money,” he said.

Mr Watchman said although queues had been big in Cairns, Townsville’s were larger.

“I think it’s been the anticipation from people waiting,” he said.

“We expect it to continue – bring it on Townsville.”

Silly Solly’s now plan to expand from regional Queensland to Brisbane.
