Fee- free parking a good start

-

EARLY results from the Townsville City Council’s decision to provide 15 minutes of free parking in the CBD are showing signs of success.

There’s no hiding from the fact our city centre has seen much better days and there is so much work that needs to be done.

People often blame the CBD’s woes on parking but the reality is the demise of the city heart is a far more complex problem caused by a multitude of factors that all require attention from a combination of business owners, residents and all levels of government.

That said, parking does have an impact and it’s refreshing to see our city council willing to have a go at modifying the rules to see if it improves things.

It demonstrates a willingness to listen and a desire to adapt, and that’s what residents and ratepayers need from local government.

The latest data showed 15- minute free CBD parking had been used more than 6000 times. It’s a good start. But the suggestions from business owners like Ann Marie Reid or Chamber of Commerce president Debbie Rains also merit exploration.

Having our parking inspectors work as city ambassadors rather than enforcers would certainly give them a different standing in the community.

Meter maids like those in Surfers Paradise might not be the right look and feel for Townsville but imagine if we had troppo parking pals or meter mates.

It sounds a bit trivial but people are so sick of living in a society that’s started to favour the stick rather than the carrot.

Consideration could also be given to extending the free period.

What happens if it’s 30 minutes instead of 15?

Revitalising our city centre requires thinking outside the square and trying new things.

In this case, it’s reassuring to see the council willing to do that. We just need to see more of it from all stakeholders.
