Junior Aussie golfing stars secure tours

- RUSSELL GOULD

AS Tiger Woods put an exclamation mark on his golfing comeback the next generation of Australian stars made their own statement securing major tour cards for 2019.

Last year’s Australian Open champion Cameron Davis, 23, and 22- year- old West Australian gun Curtis Luck will both ply their trade on the lucrative US PGA Tour after success on the secondary Web. com tour.

And Bendigo’s Lucas Herbert, also 22, will spend a full season on the European Tour after he finished tied second at the Portugal Masters, his third top- five finish this year.

Herbert, who also climbed to a career high 117 on the world rankings, led for three rounds in Portugal but fell behind in the final round and eventually came up three shots short of winner, England’s Tom Lewis.

“The goal at the start of the year was to get a main Tour card and we’ve done that, so that’s a pretty good feeling,” Herbert said.

“I can’t be too critical of myself and I have to try to take the positives at the moment even though it’s not ideal not winning after carrying a lead into the last round.”

Luck won his way through to the PGA Tour by finishing tied 8th at the Web. com Tour Championship in Florida and said his golfing dream had come true. Former Australian Open champ Matt Jones also regained his US PGA Tour card and the new trio will play alongside compatriots Jason Day, Marc Leishman, Cameron Smith and Adam Scott when the new season begins in November.
