Council lets a golden goose just slip away
I ADMIT to being addicted to John Andersen’s Talk of the North column, as it is one place where commonsense reigns supreme.
His report ( TB, 15/ 9) on the failing of our council to actively support or even do something is, to me, beyond stupidity.
It surpasses inaction and even runs stone cold last to commonsense.
Now I have a lot of time for our Mayor Jenny Hill and council as I have worked for three councils at one stage – two were amalgamated.
Bowral Council and Mittagong Shire joined with Moss Vale Shire to become Wingecarribee Shire many years ago and the other was North Sydney Council.
Now if you wanted lessons on stupidity, just see what councils in NSW get up to. I think out of the three, North Sydney takes the prize.
Those councils used to do triple backflips to bow to serial complainers instead of informing them to get a life and nick off.
North Sydney Council wanted to fine anybody for anything at anytime. They never knew the difference between enforcement and persecution as I found out with seven years as a ranger, a job that gives serial complainers a voice. Bad decision by North Sydney.
I’ve always found our council approachable, more than capable, polite staff and to be committed to our community.
It seems, though, on this occasion a great idea has fallen by the wayside simply because of inaction. This goose that could certainly lay its share of golden eggs has flown to the southeast where it will be plucked, gutted and cooked by the money- hungry cretins who infest that area and squeeze it to death to make a small fortune. And we let it escape. John Sharpe, the entrepreneur behind the idea, even spent $ 10,000 of his own money to provide the concept of a low- impact, environmentally sustainable green concept plan to council of a zip line from Castle Hill down to the city area with an afterthought of the line perhaps finishing at our new stadium.
Now there’s a bit of forward thinking for a change.
Despite the Mayor being supportive of the idea and not foreseeing any reason why it could not be done, nothing was done by the council and so we can kiss that one goodbye. What an absolute crying shame. Well done, council, you have won the monthly award for doing nothing again.
Gee, that’s at least three months running now.
Come on, prove me wrong. I’ll even shout the first round. DENIS MAY,
Annandale.
