Townsville Bulletin

No vision from Labor

-

I READ with stunned disbelief the comments in the Townsville Bulletin ( 27- 9- 19) made by the Federal Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen.

While the man who wants to oversee the national economy was laying the boot into a project which would create thousands of jobs, I was on the other side of the city receiving a briefing from the Adani CEO Lucas Dow about the progress of the project, its job creating potential and how we can ensure Townsville locals get the most out of the Carmichael Mine.

The Shadow Treasurer was in North Queensland for two days.

Surely if he cared one iota about job creation in this region he’d at least have had an interest in making an informed decision about the Carmichael Mine project by meeting with Adani and receiving an update? Is it not the Member for Herbert’s job to ensure her colleagues understand how desperately our region needs the jobs?

Sadly, on the day the Labor Members of Parliament continued to put Green preferences and their own jobs ahead of the jobs of the people of North Queensland, we see news that unemployment in our region has once again risen, now sitting at 9.5 per cent, the second highest in Queensland and 3.4 per cent above the state average.

Our region is dying under wall- to- wall Labor represent- ation. There is no vision for economic recovery and a complete refusal to back projects which could turn our fate around.

Adani CEO Lucas Dow spoke to a full house about claims the Carmichael Mine project doesn’t “stack up”. His response: “There is no company in the world which is going to put billions of dollars of investment in a pile and set the thing alight just for fun.”

Of course not. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
