Golden opportunity to party

- MARCEL BAUM

A WEEKEND of celebration has been planned for the commemoration of 150 years of gold mining at Ravenswood.

Community relations adviser for Carpentaria Gold and member of the Ravenswood Restoration and Preservation Association ( RRPA) Rebecca McLellan said expectations for the weekend were high.

“We’re expecting it to be a really great weekend with lots of people,” she said.

“We’ve got tainment on.

“I think everyone’s really looking forward to it; it’s been a lot of work … we started planning it about nine months ago,” Ms McLellan said.

Fellow RRPA member Shelley Burt was heavily involved with two of the event’s feature items.

An original mosaic chair capturing the historical spectrum of mining in Ravenswood took a whole year to complete.

“I’m pleased with it – it’s a lots of enter- long, slow process as mosaics are – ( but) it’s turned out pretty good I think,” Ms Burt said.

The mosaic chair will be unveiled about 10.30am tomorrow by Charters Towers Regional Council Mayor Liz Schmidt at the conclusion of a parade.

Ms Burt was also involved with the construction of a giant puppet portraying miners rights advocate and politician John Murtagh Macrossan.

“It’s going to be the centre of attention, he’s 2.5m tall,” she said.
