Hill spotlights funding

- TONY RAGGATT MADURA McCORMACK

MAJOR funding is needed from State or Federal governments for broadcast quality lights at Riverway Stadium.

That’s the message from Mayor Jenny Hill who also believes a detailed analysis is needed to understand exactly what lighting is required.

Cr Hill provided this response when asked about the long- running issue which has again been raised following state one- day games played in the city.

Installing lights has been raised for at least the past five years as a means of attracting MENTAL illness doesn’t discriminate nor define people. In a bid to “shatter the stigma” during Mental Health Awareness Week, Townsville Hospital and Health Service staff will wear the message on their uniforms to increase awareness of the issue.

Child and youth mental health psychiatrist Dr Donna Dowling said anyone could struggle with mental health problems being day- night international Tests, T20 Big Bash League games and possibly Australian Football League fixtures. But it appears a cost of up to $ 10 million has always been the hurdle.

Then prime minister Kevin Rudd announced $ 5 million in funding to install the lights when he met with Cr Hill and Townsville Chamber of Commerce members in July 2013.

But with the Labor Government losing to the Coalition led by Tony Abbott the fund- ing was not provided. While Cr Hill at the time welcomed the funding and indicated the council would match the sum,

“However people often underestimate the strength of their networks, be it a family member, a friend, a colleague … or a doctor there are plenty of people willing to listen and help,” she said.

“With right support you will reconnect with the components of life that maintain your wellbeing.”

Townsville HHS executive director of medical services Dr Andrew Johnson said mental health was as much about staying well as it was for being cared for if you get unwell. this week she was more cumspect.

“Council invests in bringing major sporting games and events to Townsville because they benefit the economy and help to create local jobs,” Cr Hill said.

“Before the 2013 election, former prime minister Kevin Rudd promised funding for the lights upgrade at Riverway Stadium but the election of Tony Abbott saw this proposal scrapped. cir-

“Knowing and understanding others, and allowing them to know and understand you, puts us in the best place to stay mentally well,” he said.

“It also helps to identify when things are going off the rails. It is always easier to speak out with someone you trust and that requires you to invest in those relationships beforehand.

“I’d also urge people to remember if you do become unwell we have an amazing system of support here in Townsville to get people back on their feet.”

“To deliver this project, major funding support from other levels of government is required.

“A detailed analysis would be needed to understand exactly what lighting technology is required to ensure they will continue to meet future broadcast standards.

“Most major stadiums with broadcast quality lights are funded and managed by the State Government such as the Gabba or Metricon Stadium.”
