Third man at fatal scene interviewed

- PETER MICHAEL

A MYSTERY “third man” reportedly at the scene of a double fatal stabbing at Alva Beach has been interviewed by police.

It is believed the unknown local man was at 19- year- old Dean Webber’s Topton St home when Corey Christensen, 37, and Tom Davy, 27, were fatally stabbed on September 30.

Mr Webber has told police he acted in self- defence after the three men invaded his home where Townsville woman Candice Locke, 29, was seeking refuge.

Mr Webber told investigators he was on the couch in his family’s beach house when he heard Ms Locke, who had a badly dislocated shoulder, banging on the door to be let in about 11.30pm.

It is understood Ms Locke had been at a NRL grand final party at the beach a few hundred metres up the road next to the Ayr Surf Club.

A source said she told Mr Webber she had been “pushed off” a four- wheeler while riding on the beach, assaulted and chased by drunken men who did not want her to call police.

Mr Webber called triple- 0 for an ambulance and was put through to Ayr Police Station, where a sole police officer told him he had people in the cells and could not leave and to “see how it goes”.

The teen redialled triple- 0 and kept the line open until police came almost 50 minutes later.

Excerpts of the call will be crucial for Mr Webber’s claim that he acted in self- defence.

Mr Webber told police the men went around the house, yelling threats, bashing at security screens and kicking the doors. They left but returned minutes later in a four- wheeldrive buggy with a larger group of six or seven men.

He said three men tore the screen door off the tracks and burst in.

Mr Webber was “grabbed by the throat, lifted into the air and flung to the ground,” the source said. He was left with finger marks and bruising on his throat.

The right- handed teen told police he grabbed for a knife off a bench with his left hand, swapping it to his dominant hand as he went down with the invaders on top of him, punching him in the head.

Mr Webber “flailed about with the knife in the dark” as he was pinned by his assailants, the source said.

One man was stabbed twice in the chest, the other under the armpit.

The third man fled as the other two staggered outside.

Ms Locke is said to be inconsolable and deeply distressed since the ordeal, and has since undergone surgery to her busted shoulder at Townsville Hospital. Mr Webber is also distraught and a “psychological mess”.

He was taken into police custody but was released without charge on Tuesday and has since been taken to an unknown location away from Ayr by his family.
