An export hub would excel here

-

DO NOT discount how much Townsville and large parts of the broader region will be better off if Townsville becomes a regional export hub.

Expressions of interest have closed to host the centre and a large number of regional cities in Queensland have put their hands up to host the State Government project.

The area surrounding Townsville is a hub of agricultural activity. It’s not just sugar cane, there’s a huge amount of world- class fruit and vegetables that are grown south of Townsville near Bowen and in the Burdekin.

For better or worse it is quite a labourintensive industry and there are a lot of jobs available in the sector.

If Townsville can become a hub exporting quality produce around the world that’s a win. We already have a world- class port that will get better with the channel widening project but the airport is key to getting this done.

It seems like key players from a variety of sectors are up for it, so let’s hope Townsville is chosen — it is the right place.

Fireworks light up our lives

IT WAS amazing to see so many people pack along The Strand on Saturday night for a great event.

Fire in the Sky drew thousands of people, among them many families, to one of the best parts of Townsville.

Last year was the first time the event was held and a lot was learnt from the huge crowds that showed up the first year. This time the roads were closed to deal with the 15,000- plus that showed up. There were huge line- ups for food this year and, yes, it might have annoyed some but it was a free event and it will be better again next year, just like it was better this year.

It’s amazing how much fireworks draw a crowd and gets people excited whatever their age. Events like this are important for regional centres, they bring people together and boost community pride.
