Backing on retail proposal for Nelly

- TONY RAGGATT

AN 18- hole mini golf course and set of shops will add to the tourism appeal and lifestyle of Nelly Bay on Magnetic Island, Acting Mayor Les Walker says.

The council’s planning committee considered the project yesterday and backed a council officer’s recommendation to approve its development application.

This was despite four submissions from people raising concern about the development’s impact on amenity, the availability of more appropriate sites, servicing arrangements and believing it inconsistent with the city plan.

Proponent Melinda Attwell is seeking a Material Change of Use for a shopping centre, outdoor sports and recreation and caretaker’s residence, and reconfiguration of one lot into three at a mostly vacant site at 122 Sooning St.

The 8860sq m property, zoned medium density residential, is opposite the Blue on Blue Peppers resort near the Nelly Bay ferry terminal.

The mini golf course, including a kiosk and caretaker’s residence, is proposed for the eastern part of the site, while the shopping centre, comprising of four small tenancies, is proposed for the front of the property.

Cr Walker said the proposal “ticks all the boxes” for activation of the area, the infill of vacant land in a developed area and boosting the lifestyle and tourism potential of the island.

“This is part of a bigger look at what can be achieved and will be achieved with this application,” Cr Walker said.

“It’s an addition to tourism and an activation of the area.”

Cr Ann- Maree Greaney, whose division includes Magnetic Island, also supported the proposal, saying she looked forward to this addition to the island’s amenities and services.

Other councillors questioned and were assured about arrangements for parking and onsite sewerage services.

The council was told the development complied with, and was consistent with, the strategic intent of the city plan. The proposal will be considered by the full council later this month when a decision will be made on whether to approve the development application.
