Fitness can make or break a game

- MADURA MCCORMACK

A GAME of a basketball can be decided in a matter of seconds.

So Townsville Fire forward Darcee Garbin ( pictured) knows how important it is to kick fitness goals so she can shoot that last- minute winning hoop.

The 24- year- old from Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, said she had always been an active person, walking or cycling to and from school in the country.

Garbin, now into her fourth season with the WNBL defending champion side, trains twice a day, six times a week, but said she still tried to go for a walk in the evening to clock up 10,000 steps.

Townsville Fire’s rusty start to the 2018- 19 WNBL season on Sunday, when they lost to the Dandenong Rangers by five points, proves the game can be won and lost by the smallest of margins.

“It’s really important when you come down the stretch and you’re not worried about how tired you are,” Garbin said.

“And you’re more focused about making that shot.”

Garbin is training hard to secure more playing time with the Fire, alongside her effort to move from the Australian Opal’s bench and represent the country at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
