Police say suspect was hiding under bed

A CONDON man who allegedly threatened a female bottle shop attendant and made off with a stash of alcohol was found by police huddled under his bed.

Police have alleged a 20year- old man, along with an accomplice who remains on the run, stole alcohol from the Oonoonba Hotel bottle shop on October 11.

The charged man also allegedly threatened to bash the female store attendant.

Detective Sergeant Fred Starr, of the Townsville CIB, said police managed to track down the man through forensic testing.

“On Friday night, just prior to the storm occurring, we went to this home address and found him hiding under a bed at the premises,” he said.

“The injury that was suggested to the attendant was emotionally traumatic and she had concerns about her own safety.”

Sgt Starr said the man had been charged with stealing from the same bottle shop on October 6, but no threats were made at that time. The man had been on bail at the time of committing the alleged offences, according to police.

In a completely separate incident, a man armed with a baseball bat threatened staff and stole a sum of cash from the Oonoonba Hotel on October 5.

Police found two litre bottles of rum at the man’s home, which was allegedly stolen during the recent incident.

“We’re talking cartons of UDL, so it was quite substantial,” Sgt Starr said.

“Two cartons, one in each hand, rum stuck under their arms, they managed to do it. That’s confirmed by CCTV.”
