Kirwan’s top players gain Chelsea class

- TRENT SLATTER

KIRWAN High’s top footballing talents will get a new perspective on the world game next week when they train at the elite Chelsea FC Soccer School in Bangkok, Thailand.

Twenty- three boys and two girls from Kirwan’s football academy will get the chance to learn from the official Chelsea FC international coaches at the state- of- the- art facility.

Each training session will focus on different football skills which mirror sessions the coaches run with the main Chelsea team in England and their development academy.

Kirwan football academy coach David Curtain said it was a great experience for the young players to learn from such highly- qualified coaches.

“There’s a few students that it’s going to be their first time going overseas so it’s an amazing opportunity,” Curtain said. “It will definitely give them an appreciation of a professional football club and how well prepared and well run they are.

“Each day will be a mix of both football during the day and then doing some cultural experiences over there and giving them a bit of an appreciation for various cultures.

“They’ll get a lot out of it both on and off the field.”

Kirwan students also had the opportunity to train at the Chelsea facility in Thailand in 2016 in what was the school’s first international sporting trip and Curtain said they were excited to return.

“There’s about 10 kids who are going again. The parents are very supportive of it and it shows how much the initial group loved the experience,” he said.
