Townsville Bulletin

Do not drain our funding

-

I WAS absolutely bewildered to read in Saturday’s Bulletin, October 20, 2018, that the LNP candidate for Herbert is backing the Member for Dawson’s call to redirect the remaining $ 75 million from the TEARC project away from Townsville.

This begs the question, does the LNP candidate for Herbert know that long- term water security is the number one issue for the people of Townsville?

This just shows how completely out of touch the LNP government truly is with the people of Townsville.

If the LNP candidate for Herbert is serious about Townsville’s long- term water security, then he and the Member for Dawson would be well advised to match Labor’s commitment of $ 100 million towards Stage 2 of the Haughton Pipeline.

During Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s last visit to Townsville he promised that the entire $ 150 million from the TEARC project would be kept in the electorate of Herbert. Yet, last week both the LNP candidate for Herbert and the Member for Dawson called on the Morrison Government to redirect the remaining TEARC money to the Big Rocks weir project, which is over 100km from Townsville.

My question to the LNP candidate for Herbert is why is he lobbying his government to redirect money for vital infrastructure away from Townsville?

Surely he should be fighting to keep these funds in our community and not be looking to break promises made by the Prime Minister.

Is this something we can come to expect from the LNP candidate for Herbert and his campaign?

Townsville needs Stage 2 of the Haughton Pipeline funded and it should be the LNP Government’s top priority for the electorate of Herbert.

Labor knows water security is the number one priority for Townsville and that is why we committed $ 100 million for Stage 2 of the Haughton Pipeline over a year ago.

I will continue to stand up and fight for this community and the vital infrastructure funding that we need and deserve. CATHY O’TOOLE, Member for Herbert.
