Set free, off on a spree

- MADURA MCCORMACK

A CONDON man will remain in custody after allegedly going on a crime spree six minutes after being released on bail.

It is alleged Shane Robert Alexander, 30, had just been released on bail on about 15 serious charges when he hopped into a red Holden Commodore bearing false plates.

He then allegedly ran a red light at the corner of Flinders and Little Fletcher streets about 1.25pm on Monday, crashing into two cars before fleeing.

Police arrested him at the corner of Boundary St and Charters Towers Rd.

Inspector Roger Whyte said the man then punched a male police officer in the face, causing him to suffer a sprained ankle, some bruising and scratching under his eye.

“Utter nonsense, this behaviour,” Insp Whyte said.

“This is the type of disregard, callous disregard, for law and order.

“This individual was on serious charges … ( He) could have caused further disruption to our community by committing other offences, but no, he has been apprehended and he is where he should be – in custody. To assault or attempt to assault a police officer is totally unacceptable and we won’t put up with it.”

Alexander was charged with a further 12 offences, include dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to remain at an accident, two counts of disqualified driving, two counts of stealing false plates, two counts of driving uninsured vehicle, two counts of unregistered vehicle and serious assault of a public officer.

He is due to reappear in Townsville Magistrates Court on October 30.
