Big salute for support of veterans

-

VETERANS have taken centre stage this week in the political sphere.

And given these men and women serve our country with such bravery it’s apt that their issues are given due consideration by federal politicians.

This week, the Bulletin has been fortunate to share a series called Voodoo Medics, which details the heroics of a small group of combat medics who save lives in Afghanistan under incredibly tough conditions.

It gives an insight into what our service personnel endure.

When we learned this week that the Morrison Government would become a minority government, North Queensland MP Bob Katter quickly put in his demands to the Coalition.

In order to receive his support, his party said the Federal Government should establish a military covenant, protect veterans’ disability payments and create a veterans’ ID card.

Then, Prime Minister Scott Morrison revealed plans for a US- style military card that would give every Australian veteran access to discounts on items such as food and electricity.

That those men and women who make sacrifices to serve our country are at the top of the political agenda is to be applauded.

Especially in a garrison city like Townsville, policy to support our veterans will mostly be welcomed.

But veterans’ affairs is complicated and needs a tactful approach.

The Australian Defence Force works hard in trying to prepare its personnel to be fully employable when they transition into civilian life.

And, while there are a great many who need support, it is important to note that veterans, in general, don’t all need charity. They are highly trained and skilled individuals.

The Morrison Government’s suggestions are meant with the greatest of respects. The Bulletin will be very interested to hear how they will be received in our community.
