TOWNSVILLE high school students are more ready than ever to jump into careers after school with the help of a hands- on workshop.

Kirwan State High School hosted the Gateway to Industry Workshop in conjunction with the Department of Education and Training, for students who will soon be leaving school and are discovering various career opportunities in a variety of fields.

Students got a unique, first- person view into how to break into various industry careers in fields like event management, hospitality and human resources.

A Touch of Salt head chef Michael Brine and event manager Elise Campbell, The Ville Resort- Casino human resources manager Karin Hunter and Paronella Park marketing manager Bridget Evans all visited the school to speak with students about their potential career options.

The Department of Education assisted with the workshop in an attempt to build valuable partnerships between schools and industry.

The partnerships are set to help enable young people to acquire the knowledge, skills and attributes to participate effectively in the Queensland economy.

Kirwan State High School said they were proud to be involved with the program to deliver outcomes for students to assist them to a range of learning experience that will assist them in their career choices and pathways to employment, in a program that would directly benefit Townsville’s economy and community.

Students enjoyed the presentations, asked great questions and the school is excited to see them involved in the industry when they leave school.

The Gateway to Industry Workshop was also the first time the school’s new Excelsior Centre hall was used as a venue, ahead of the first full- school parade.

Kirwan State High School principal Meredith Wenta said the opening of the Excelsior Centre was a milestone in the history of the school and will be part of the future of the school and its community.

Following the Gateway to Industry Workshop, Kirwan High is also set to host an upcoming Industry Appreciation Evening.

The evening aims to offer Year 12 VET students and industry professionals an opportunity to network and celebrate the students’ successes throughout the year.
