‘ Birdcage’ to bring party atmosphere

- KELSIE IORIO

THE Ville Resort- Casino’s Melbourne Cup Day event is set to deliver a high- end social atmosphere for the race that stops the nation.

Held in one of The Ville’s newest spaces, The Pavilion, organisers have changed up the traditional sit- down luncheon and are excited to unveil the new cocktail party format inspired by Flemington Racecourse’s famous ‘ Birdcage’.

The Ville’s chief executive, Michael Jones, said the venue’s redevelopment inspired organisers to try something new.

“This is the first year we’ve had our brand new function space, The Pavilion, for Melbourne Cup,” he said.

“It’s such a fantastic venue so we thought we really needed to do something special.”

With entertainment, fashion and food galore, ticket sales are strong and the event is expected to be popular.

Party- goers can expect canapés and share platters, fresh oyster shucking, top- shelf beverages, a pamper lounge, bubble bar, a live DJ and all the racing and fashions streamed from Flemington.

The Ville’s marketing manager, Emily Roebuck, if all the racing action and fashions weren’t enough, Townsville’s own star performer Kurt Phelan would host the event.

“We have Kurt Phelan coming home to Townsville, taking some time out of his busy schedule performing na- tionally and internationally to be our roaming commentator or ‘ hype boy’ on the day,” she said.

“He’ll be roaming the room, mingling and chatting with guests, providing witty commentary on the fashions on the field at Flemington, and just generally being his hilarious self. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Ms Roebuck said there had been a positive response to the cocktail party format since details were first released two months ago.

“People had been telling us that they wanted something a little bit different this year, but it was definitely a gamble to change up the tried and tested Melbourne Cup format,” she said.

Five dollars from every ticket sold will also be donated to Ronald McDonald House North Queensland.

Ronald McDonald House Charities North Australia chief executive Amy Cooper said the organisation was delighted to be the event’s charity of choice.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for the Townsville community to have a glamorous day out and give back at the same time by helping us raise much- needed funds to support sick children and their families when they are experiencing a medical crisis,” she said.

Tickets for Melbourne Cup in The Pavilion are still available but selling fast.
