OFFICER INJURED AS CAR RAMMED

- MADURA MCCORMACK

A POLICE officer was injured and a woman had her car hijacked in a dramatic incident involving three males in a stolen vehicle.

Tactical Services Group’s Inspector Sean Dugger said officers had been tracking three males in a car allegedly stolen yesterday morning.

Officers deployed two sets of tyre spikes on Bundock St before 2pm, causing two tyres of the stolen car, a white Mazda, to deflate. It will be alleged the offenders continued driving along Bundock St, on to the wrong side of the road and stopped a car.

They then allegedly forced a female driver, the sole occupant of the car, out of her vehicle.

It is alleged the offenders, in a bid to escape, rammed an unmarked police car, injuring an officer inside. The female driver was uninjured.

Insp Dugger said a Taser was used on one of the suspects, and all three were taken into custody.

Lauren Braithwaite, 19, of Annandale, said the white Mazda was stolen from her home earlier in the morning.

“They stole my keys and took my car,” she said. “It was someone who lives on this street who messaged me saying they thought they saw my car.

“( I feel) pretty terrified, kind of shaken, stressed.”

It is understood the police officer allegedly rammed in his car suffered a foot injury and was taken in a stable condition to the Townsville Hospital.
