Palmer boasts of wealth in court

Attempts by Mr Palmer’s legal team to have the hearing adjourned at the 11th hour were branded as a “stunt” by barrister for the liquidators Robert Newlinds SC and ultimately rejected by Judge John Reeves who allowed the examination to go ahead.

Mr Newlinds asked why $ 15,000 had been transferred from Mr Palmer’s company’s bank account to his nephew’s girlfriend’s bank account, despite Mr Palmer saying he was not in touch with either of them.

“Well $ 15,000 is hardly a large amount of money by my standards, it’s like $ 1.50 for you,” Mr Palmer said. “I earn a million dollars a day, $ 15,000 doesn’t bother me.

“I’d be happy to send her half a million if she wanted.” Mr Palmer said he didn’t view his nephew as a fugitive and denied comments from Mr Newlinds who said Mr Palmer didn’t want him to return “because you want him as far away from the Queensland Supreme Court as possible”.

Mr Palmer’s brother- in- law George Sokolov last week told the court he had long been “perfectly capable” of helping Mr Palmer and Mr Mensink communicate and that he had sent an email to Mr Mensink on Mr Palmer’s behalf earlier this year.

“I think he has a problem with comprehension,” Mr Palmer said of his Bulgarian brother- in- law who works as a litigation support manager for his companies. “We do have trouble from time to time … we think he’s doing the right thing and he’s not.”
