Jail sentence for posting of cannabis

- SAM BIDEY

A TOWNSVILLE man has been jailed for posting cannabis to a friend in the Northern Territory.

Appearing in Townsville District Court on Tuesday, David Graham Dunn, 45, pleaded guilty to 19 counts of supplying a dangerous drug and one count of possessing a mobile phone used in the commission of a drug offence.

The father of three met the man he was supplying drugs to when working in a small town in the Northern Territory.

Police raided a Townsville property where Dunn was staying on October 7, 2017, and seized his mobile phone which was forensically analysed, revealing his drug supplying.

Crown prosecutor Monique Sheppard said over the course of a year Dunn supplied about 4kg of cannabis with more amounts offered.

The court heard Dunn was a “middle man” who would get a request for drugs, have money deposited in his bank account, then use the cash to purchase from a supplier in Townsville before posting the cannabis to the Northern Territory.

“The product would be packaged in 5kg Australia Post bags, cryovaced and packaged with other items to avoid detection,” Ms Sheppard said. “There was some degree of sophistication to the offending.”

Ms Sheppard said during the year of supply Dunn profited about $ 3400.

She said he made admis- sions to police not reveal the his supplier.

Included in Dunn’s offending were two counts of supplying a dangerous drug relating to relatively small quantities of cannabis to a local friend.

The court heard Dunn had been a user of cannabis but stopped prior to his arrest.

“You said that you smoked cannabis but you did not buy it just to smoke,” Judge Greg Lynham said.

“Clearly in my view it is appropriate to categorise your offending of being that of a middle man.

“( Supplying cannabis) has a maximum penalty of 15 years imprisonment … inevitably a period of imprisonment has to be imposed and in my view it is only appropriate that a period of actual imprisonment be ordered to be served.”

Taking into account his lack of relevant criminal history Judge Lynham sentenced Dunn to 2 ½ years’ jail to be released on parole after serving six months. but would identity of
