- KELSIE IORIO

TOWNSVILLE movie buffs will get a unique insight into the making of a fascinating documentary when the Travelling Film Festival visits the region this month.

Australian director and journalist Travis Beard will visit Townsville for a screening and Q& A about his documentary RocKabul, about Afghanistan’s first metal band.

Mr Beard will introduce the screening, and engage in an audience Q& A afterwards on Saturday, November 21, as part of the regional tour of the Sydney Film Festival.

RocKabul band’s rise chronicles the amid Kabul’s fiercely munity.

With practice sessions frequently interrupted by power cuts and exploding bombs, the band District Unknown must make a choice between continuing to play or give in as they risk their lives for rock music.

Working as an organiser of skate and graffiti events, Mr Beard first met the band in 2009.

Festival manager Karina Libbey said Mr Beard would share insight into the making of the incredible documentary with North Queensland viewers.

“We’re delighted to bring Travis to Townsville,” she said.

“This is a rare chance to conservative com- catch the story behind one of Afghanistan’s most captivating music stories of young men literally risking their lives, all in the name of rock and roll, from the war zone of Kabul.”

The Travelling Film Festival will visit 18 regional locations around Australia, including Cairns, Mackay, Bundaberg, Toowoomba and Nambour as part of the Queensland leg of the tour.

Program highlights include 2018 Sydney Film Prize winner The Heiresses, a rare gem from Paraguay, and from Oscar- nominated filmmaker Gus Van Sant Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot, a touching portrait of the cult- cartoonist John Callahan, following a life- changing accident, starring superstars Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara and Jonah Hill.
