Fiorente hailed as big hope

- MICHAEL MANLEY

INGLIS pedigree consultant Mark Dodemaide believes Fiorente could be the stallion the Victorian breeding industry has been searching for decades.

Tomorrow, the Melbourne Cup winner will be represented in the Victoria Derby by Stars Of Carrum and he also is the sire of first emergency and another last start winner in Alessandro.

“Victoria has been searching for a staying sire for decades with horses like Prince True, Almaarad, Sumayr and Bonhomie. This very good looking son of Monsun could be what we’ve been searching for,” Dodemaide said. Fiorente stands at Sun Stud Kerrie and stud operations manager David Grant said if he could sire a Victoria Derby winner in his first crop it could revolutionise the breeding industry in the state.

Fiorente’s sire Monsun also sired Protectionist and Alamandin to win the Melbourne Cup.

“It will underline to local breeders that it’s doable to breed a classic winner in this state,” Grant said.

Grant said they’ve had to be patient waiting for the progeny of the Melbourne Cup winner to get out over more ground.

“All the trainers have said they are good movers. We had to sit on our hands and bide our time.

“The mail was that they were out there and would fire when they got over a trip.”

He said he also hoped that racing administrators would start putting on more staying races for younger horses.

He said Fiorente would serve a book of between a 110 to 140 mares.
