Can’t afford Labor win

- DENIS MAY, Annandale.

THANK you Barry Lowe of Kirwan for your informative letter ( Bulletin, Saturday, November 3) in which you not only explained the workings of our Constitution and changing of same, but you also highlighted the underhanded tactics being employed by Labor in general and by Bill Shorten in particular in trying to undermine our Constitution and sneak in further debate on being a republic.

Your letter was like a breath of fresh air and hopefully wake up fellow voters into forgetting ( despite what the media tell us) that Labor winning power in the next election is done and dusted.

Is not the election of our government decided by the people and not by the media?

There is one vital question we must all consider before voting and that is how much more pain will Labor inflict on our household budget and what the long- term effects Labor will have on our economy.

One of the most despicable and greedy proposals I have ever seen put forward as a policy by any political party is the proposed abolition of the franking credits scheme ( dividend imputations) if Labor wins power.

The effects of the abolition of the tax treatment regarding refunding of your dividend imputations – currently a longterm legal investment strategy which has been in place for many years now – will affect all investors, not just the wealthy but small business owners and low- income investors, and their superannuation nest egg will be affected.

Small business accounts for 97.4 per cent of all businesses in Australia ( figures: Australian Stock Report, September 30).

For many investors it will mean a major change of investment strategies by both small investors and super funds over time well into the foreseeable future.

As claimed by the Alliance for a Fairer Retirement System, it is estimated up to 70 per cent of retirees over 75 years may suffer a 30 per cent cut in dividend income under this Labor policy. Can you afford any reduction in income in these expensive times trying to raise a family? I think not!

Could you live to a respectable level if your super fund paid you out when you wished to draw on your superannuation, if it was a reduced amount after investment strategies changed under this proposed policy? Again, I think not.

If we the people vote Labor in we do not have a brain in our respective heads just on this proposed policy in itself.

Do you all think the LNP are the only ones to knife their leaders? Just see how long Shorten lasts if they lose. They are all the same.

Under Labor, North Queensland gets sweet little in representation – not a fair share of funding and no long- term infrastructure.

At least if Labor gets in every state will get sweet little as well. The country cannot afford a Labor victory.

Please consider the long- term cost to the country when you next vote in a federal or state election

The LNP do not have all the answers but at least it may not cost billions extra to ask questions, and based on our past results we won’t get any answers anyway – just more of the same.

Perhaps we should be asking Labor to explain just who will benefit under any proposed abolition of the dividend imputation scheme.

I for one would be very interested to know. How about you?
