Tap into many benefits from water recycling

- JEFF SELLARS, Hyde Park.

WE HAVE heard a hell of a lot about water security, restrictions and pumping costs of $ 32,000 a day, also more than $ 200 million on new pipelines etc.

What we have never hear from any of the professionals associated with water, is future developments on water recycling or savings.

This is a no- brainer and can be achieved with little expertise and little cost. Why is it never addressed?

Just imagine the amount of water, albeit grey, that could be used in or on the gardens from just one home let alone businesses. Most houses have two showers, two hand basins, a washing machine and laundry tubs.

I won’t try to accurately calculate the water ( grey) that is wasted per day per four- person household. Let’s say conservatively, including waiting for the shower to warm up, about five litres per person or 20- plus litres per day or 140 litres per week.

Extrapolate that out to 50,000 homes, add on units and then commercial operations – that’s a lot of water down the drain just in Townsville. If governments subsidised water saving devices that tap into the waste outlets, be it a storage tank/ pump or merely gravity feed directly to gardens or lawns a significant part of the water security usage problem would be solved.

Maybe Sunwater etc could fund the project?
