LINKING KIDS TO WAR HISTORY

- TESS IKONOMOU

STUDENTS at a Townsville primary school will have information about every major war and conflict Australian men and women fought in through a new interactive project.

The Willows State School was awarded a grant worth nearly $ 15,000 for their Commemorative Walk Project. Grants were secured by Herbert MP Cathy O’Toole to help six local organisations commemorate the Armistice centenary.

Pavers will be installed around the school and students and their parents can enter a code from an app that will then give information about a specific conflict.

Defence school mentor Correna Wheeler advocated for the project and said she hoped it would resonate with students at the largest defence primary school in Australia.

Principal Helen McCullough said the project would be available to anyone who visited the school.

“To have something that is connecting children to their family history as well as the Australian Defence Force is really important,” she said.

“Every class will have the opportunity to show their families and children in those classes how to use the code.”
