Frank feels weight lifted

A SHOCKING workplace accident has done anything but weaken Frank Moravcik.

The 44- year- old Wulguru man had his right lower leg amputated after it was crushed when he was working as a factory attendant in 2014.

Moravcik turned to the gym to help with his recovery, but that soon became much more.

“I started training during 2015, it was basically recovery,” Moravcik said.

“It was a case of going to the gym and working on fitness and then I saw videos of heavy lifting and thought I’d give that a go.

“Strength training helped with recovery, now it’s a passion.”

Moravcik has since started competing in strongman competitions, and rarely a day goes by where he is not pushing himself to the maximum to get that little bit ahead.

He will head to Brisbane to compete on Saturday in his fourth competition this year.

At the strongman competitions he has competed in in Cairns, Moravcik has pulled a bus and tested himself in atlas stone lifts and dead lifts.

He said he used the competitions to gauge his im- provement. “At the end of the day, I’m seeing improvement in myself,” he said.

“I’ve got my own gym at home so I do most of my training there – there’s less distraction.”

Moravcik said he used online videos to teach himself proper form and technique.

He said he had to do few modifications to the way he lifted with his prosthetic leg and could largely follow the same techniques shown in the videos.

Moravcik can bench press 175kg, dead lift 200kg and squat 170kg.

He will put these lifts to the test in his first powerlifting competition in Townsville in February at Valhalla Strength gym.

Moravcik has also set his sights on taking on the world at international events.

“I’m hoping next year to compete in the World Disabled Strongman competition in Germany,” he said.

To fuel his bulging muscles, Moravcik eats double the recommended daily calorie intake of an average man.

“It’s more so calories,” he said.

“It has to be over 5000 calories, so over five meals a day.” getting the
