KOBY FIGHTS T O REALISE PLAN

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

ONCE Townsville’s Koby Wood- Lynch was bitten by the martial arts bug, there was no going back.

The 14- year- old talent is fast- tracking his way to national honours after taking up martial arts just three years ago, and has his eyes set on a Mixed Martials Arts ( MMA) career.

Wood- Lynch has shown the right skills so far, having taken out numerous local tournaments including World Karate Associationsanctioned competitions, and is training for February’s Grapling Industries tournament on the Gold Coast.

“I love it, it’s awesome,” Wood- Lynch said.

“I did a little bit of kickboxing when I was younger, and then I stopped and started playing soccer for a while.

“I got a bit bored of soccer, and I started watching MMA and boxing.

“I loved it and I decided that’s what I wanted to do.”

Wood- Lynch, who attends Ignatius Park College, ranks MMA stars Georges StPierre and Australia’s Robert Whittaker as his sporting idols.

And he is leaving no stone unturned in his quest to one day fight at the very top.

“I usually train six times a week, so every day except Sunday,” Wood- Lynch said, who is part of the Courage Training Centre stable.

“I have great coaches as well and they’re just awesome.”

Wood- Lynch also has some handy connections, with his uncle being Australian taekwondo grand master Jamie Moore.

He also recently trained with legendary American kickboxing champion Benny ‘ The Jet’ Urquidez.

“I had to learn a lot when I started, but the hard work is worth it,” Wood- Lynch said.
