Wave at a Truckie Day

- SANDRA HUBERT, Yabulu.

ABOUT 15 years ago, our family lived up the Upper Ross.

Having three young sons, we travelled Riverway Drive many times each day.

On our journey we passed many trucks but one stood out, it was a red quarry truck and the man had lots of facial hair plus his truck had a sign “Baby Maker”.

My sons thought that the driver must have a good sense of humour and that we should wave.

This started wonderful memories of my sons yelling: “Mummy, there’s Our Truck”.

We waved every time we saw Our Truck.

Even when he removed the sign that didn’t faze my boys as they could pick his truck out of all the others and still wave.

Yes, I waved too. Lots of giggles and chatter could be heard in my car.

It got so that I could spot Our Truck out of the corner of my eye and my hand would go up to wave even when the boys weren’t in the car.

Life isn’t always kind and one day I was driving into town with the world on my shoulders.

Something caught my eye and as I looked up, there was Our Truck and there was the driver waving at me with both hands and a big smile.

I wish he had seen the smile that appeared on my face and all the worries of the world slide off my shoulders.

We thank this truck driver whom we have never met.

Not only did he brighten my life that day, he also gave us wonderful memories of the times our boys, now grown up and I were waving and laughing together, which I treasure.

Now when I see a red truck I smile and, yes, sometimes I even wave.

November 22 is Wave at a Truckie Day, so please raise your hand and wave to thank a truckie.

Smile too, as you never know the impact that could have.
