Cate gets among the awards yet again

- PAUL MALONE

SWIMMER Cate Campbell last night led a parade of female athletes to win the majority of the major honours at the Queensland Sport Awards.

For the second time in three years, Campbell was named The Courier- Mail/ Channel 7 Queensland Sport Star at a function at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Campbell, 26, is only the fourth winner of multiple Sport Star awards since its inauguration by Q Sport in 1995, joining Susie O’Neill, Michael Doohan and Grant Hackett.

Campbell, her younger sister Bronte, Emma McKeon and Shayna Jack won the XXXX Gold Queensland team of the year for their 4x100m freestyle relay gold medal at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in a world- record time.

Their Games swim teammate Ariarne Titmus, 17, took out The Courier- Mail/ Channel 7 Junior Sport Star award.

And the LGAQ coach of the year award went to Sunshine Coast Lightning coach Noeline Taurua for guiding her team to the Super Netball title.

Para snowboarding champion Simon Patmore was presented with the Peter Lacey Award for sporting excellence.

Campbell returned from the Pan Pacs with five gold medals in August, four months after she won three golds at the Commonwealth Games.

The other Sport Star finalists were: Ash Barty ( tennis), Ali Brigginshaw ( rugby league), Campbell ( swimming), Mark Knowles ( hockey), Beth Mooney ( cricket), Tia- Clair Orr ( weightlifting), Clare Polkinghorne ( football), Will Power ( motor racing), Michael Shelley ( athletics), Cameron Smith ( golf) and Stephanie Wood ( netball).
