Not such a bad bloke

-

SO the “We hate Mundine” crowd is enjoying his knockout and stating the obvious about his mouth and what he shouldn’t do but … you’ve all been fooled.

Just like Mohammed Ali, he uses the media and his hype game to promote his fights and it worked again!

All of the talk about sitting for the anthem got everyone angry and talking about the fight.

The anthem wasn’t even played.

I ask all those who hate Mundine if they also hated Mohammed Ali?

He called white people “blue eyed devils!” He refused to serve in the US Army stating “… the draft is white men telling black men to go kill yellow men to protect the land they stole from red men!”

Sure, dislike him for his views about homosexuality or his views on war or even his warped sense of what he thinks are Aboriginal values but all of you out there who ignore what he says about the racism/ ignorance of the anthem or the racism that exists in this nation or the way black people are treated in your own communities, clearly choose to turn your heads away.

All of you who say “actions speak louder than words” look at his life.

He never smoked, drank or did drugs. He has donated millions to charities such as housing projects, hospitals and youth projects.

He has helped countless young athletes to pursue their dreams and he transitioned from an elite junior basketballer to the highest paid NRL premiership winning player to our most successful and highest paid boxer.

Don’t get me wrong, I dislike some of his statements too, especially what he said about homosexuality and Aboriginal culture.

I hope that in retirement his views change, just like Mohammed Ali’s views changed about white people being devils but I ask you to search your soul to see if, like Adam Goodes and Joe Williams Jr, is there a sense that he should behave and be a supplicant rather than call out racism?

Why should he not use his platform to call out bigotry and injustice? Just a thought. MAX LENOY,

Cranbrook.
