Midcourter takes out coveted Ellis award

-

THE netballing accolades continue to mount for midcourter Liz Watson, who has been awarded the coveted Liz Ellis Diamond at the sport’s awards night in Melbourne.

Watson received the Liz Ellis Diamond on Saturday to recognise her domestic and international exploits for the Melbourne Vixens and Australia during the past 18 months.

The 24- year- old was also named Australia’s international player of the year, the achievements following her naming as the Vixens’ best and fairest player for the second time.

“Over the past 18 months Liz’s game has reached another level, with consistent performances for the Melbourne Vixens and strong performances with the Diamonds,” Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander said.

“Liz has shown her leadership and determination both on and off the court.

“Liz’s efforts at international level were recognised by her teammates earlier this year when she was elevated to the Diamonds leadership group. She is an athlete who is highly coachable and humble, with an unparalleled work ethic.”

The West Coast Fever’s Jamaican shooter Jhaniele Fowler won the Super Netball player of the year award after a debut season that featured a competition record 783 goals at a success rate of 92.5 per cent.

The Fever’s Stacey Marinkovich was named coach of the year after guiding the side from second last in the 2017 Super Netball competition to this year’s grand final, where they were beaten by the Sunshine Coast Lightning.
