Chamber has jam- packed agenda for 136th AGM

- TONY RAGGATT

ONE of the State’s long- running business groups, the Townsville Chamber, will hold its 136th annual general meeting today at The Ville Resort- Casino.

Chamber executive officer MarieClaude Brown said the chamber had been continuously serving the business community of Townsville since 1882.

“We are one of the oldest public institutions in North Queensland,” Ms Brown said.

The chamber will ask members to elect three new board members: Allied Health executive director at Townsville Hospital and Health Services Danielle Hornsby; GetBranded principal Madonna Simmons and Fuji Xerox Business Centre general manager Micheal Thorsen.

“The chamber has an excellent board who bring a wealth of experience in tourism, retail, law, engineering, education, IT, investment, finance, and event management,” Ms Brown said.

“The addition of experience in health services, marketing and business services will help the chamber remain relevant.”

Ms Brown said the meeting would also include Townsville City Council’s annual address to the business community.

She said the meeting would be the culmination of a big year for the organisation.

Demands for representation had increased with board members attending on average six meetings, workshops or roundtables a week.

She said the chamber had gained traction on social media, averaging 40,000 views a month across all platforms, while the organisation had adapted to the use of cloud- based computing.

“We have updated our operational systems to meet current expectations to continue to create value for our members as well as remain a viable business and a relevant organisation,” Ms Brown said.

She said the chamber hosted its most successful Business Awards in June with more than 325 guests and 26 finalists.
