Simmons probably a World Cup no-show

- MATT LOGUE

BOOMERS assistant coach Luc Longley does not think Ben Simmons will play for Australia at this year’s World Cup in China.

Simmons’s eligibility for August and September Cup remains unknown as he negotiates a five-year $223 million extension with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Melbourne-born guard addressed representing Australia on Channel 9s The Today Show yesterday.

Simmons was asked about the strength of the Boomers’ roster and his plans to don the green and gold but he failed to mention the World Cup.

Instead, he reaffirmed his commitment to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

“For me to represent Australia – the only real way I want to do that is winning a medal,” Simmons said.

“That is the priority when I go to the Olympics.”

Simmons’s statement comes as Longley told The Daily Telegraph he would be surprised if the 76ers star suited up at the World Cup.

“I’m not expecting Ben to play,” Longley said.

“The indication he has given us is that he’ll play at the Olympics. He wants to help Australia win its first medal but I’d doubt he’ll play at the World Cup.”

Simmons’s popularity continues to rise.

The reigning NBA Rookie of the Year is the No.3 top selling NBA singlet in Australia.

Simmons joins fellow Australian Joe Ingles (No.10) on a star-studded list.

Los Angeles Lakers marquee man Lebron James finished No.1 ahead of his former Miami teammate, Dwayne Wade.
