Crime fuels questions

-

I REFER to the front-page article “Dicing with death”

( TB, 15/1).

It goes without saying that the police on the ground are doing a fantastic job especially with them having one hand tied behind their backs, so to speak.

It means we see the recidivists being arrested then being released on bail at the first opportunity so they can go on the rampage over again.

However, reading the article I would suggest that we, the public, are possibly not being told the whole story.

How is it that a vehicle was allegedly stolen at 7.30am then was involved in the occupants stealing fuel from two service stations before being apprehended late afternoon the same day?

The theft of fuel on two separate occasions would suggest that the vehicle was in use the whole time with the need for the fuel tank to be replenished.

That being the case, how was it that the vehicle was being driven around the streets undetected in that time frame with the police receiving multiple calls as to its locations?

We have seen how the vehicles are being driven on the roads by the antics of the stolen vehicles from Ingham some time ago.

And how can it be that a vehicle is stolen from Cairns then involved in a so-called petrol drive off along the Bruce Highway, then is stopped in Townsville some 400km away?

Likewise vehicles stolen from Mackay.

It would appear that stolen vehicles are allowed to travel the Bruce Highway with what appears to be impunity.

Do we have enough police on duty to deal with these situations or have the police been instructed to keep a low profile in such circumstances?

We have it drummed into us every day that one km/h over is a killer, yet it would appear stolen vehicles travel the highway unchallenged putting people’s lives at risk.
